Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation
Closed-cell spray foam is a medium density, 2lb per cubic foot, rigid polyurethane foam that provides an excellent air, vapor and moisture barrier. It is used in interior and exterior applications, both above and below grade. Closed-cell foam has a much higher R-value than traditional insulation and can maximize R-value with limited thickness. It can dramatically add to structural integrity due to its high density and compression strength
Spray foam insulation is a versatile, high-performing insulation that can be used for residential and commercial construction. Spray foam insulation has a high R value typically averaging around R7 per inch and is most commonly a 2lb per cubic foot density. Closed cell foam is an insulation, air barrier and vapor barrier. This makes it a true 3 in 1 product. Closed cell spray foam will seal up and cracks or void in your structure and eliminate the air leakage. It is none porous and does not absorb any moisture. Because of this, it does not require and additional vapor barrier. Although closed cell foam does come with a large upfront cost, the return on investment for most homes in reduced heating and cooling cost, is as little at 5 years.
Closed cell foam also produces an increase in structural strength. It can increase racking and shearing strength of a structure by up to 300%. It also has very high compression strength with some 2lb foams having as high as 35psi compression strength.
For use in underslab, closed cell spray foam can replace foam board sheeting. It can be sprayed direct to prepped ground and easily spray around plumping, footings, and other obstacles that can be hard to fabricate with foam board. There is also no need for taping seams and putting a plastic vapor barrier under the foam board. Underslad closed cell foam is seamless and provides higher compression strength than most foam boards. Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation
Because open cell foam is porous and does not stop vapor transmission, an internal poly vapor barrier is still needed in our climate region. Because of this, closed cell foam is more often used and is what we recommend on exterior wall in our climate zones 6 and 7
